Big Bait vs. Little Bait

What size crank do you reach for in the middle of summer?  Do you go for the 3 inch jig or the 4 inch?  This time of year it's important to know the cycle of the bait and the ecosystem you fish.  Plenty of food for fish to eat means you have to either match the hatch OR be different and draw their attention.  Reaction strikes on big baits is a great way to catch summer fish.  Sometimes a smaller bait and slower presentation is the key for well fed fish.  Lets talk bait size and what consideration you should give that.  

Cranks...Flicker Shads

Lets break down crank baits!  We start of this series with our favorite and a big producer...Berkley Flicker Shads and Flicker Minnows.  Berkley makes a line of great crank baits.  From the Cutters for jerk baits to Bad Shads to the Flicker Shad, it's tough to compete with production and price.  In this episode we talk about favorite colors and ways to fish these versatile baits.   

The Next Level...Winning Mentality

This year has been a tough year for many reasons and tournament fishing is no exception.  For the past 5 years we have noticed our winning mentality has changed to from winning to consistently having a good finish.  We have become to accustom to fishing ways that produce fish on almost any body of water instead of casting for good fish on specific spots.  It's all about being consistent and it should be about winning.  How to make those ideas come together is The Winning Mentality.     

Just Jigs

Keep it simple.  Jigs are the most versatile Walleye bait made.  Cast them, jig them, pitch them, vertical jig them, drag them...it doesn't matter how you work them, a jig will produce bites.  In this podcast we talk a little bit about jigging and our favorite jigs and jig presentations.  It's a big topic...I think I smell a Next Level episode coming soon.   

The Next Level...Tough Conditions

Wind, rain and snow.  All Conditions you will have to face when trying to win your next tournament or when you arrive for that vacation of a lifetime in Canada.  Tough conditions are mother natures way of reminding us we are at her mercy when we fish.  Fluctuating levels, cold fronts, stained water and massive thunderstorms are all possible factors that can make your bite very difficult.  In this Next Level we start where we left off in the podcast and we go into detail about how we fish some of the tough conditions.  Fish behavior, equipment tips and boat control are some of the topics we discuss.  Welcome to the Next Level! 

Tough Conditions

It's Saturday morning and the boats are lining up.  Team 1 comes over the radio and you see team 1 blast off.  Team 15 is called and you slam down the throttle and hear that big motor come to life.  The loud growl of outboard horse power barks out and you are off.  You round the corner to your first spot and come off plane to feel a strong breeze picking up.  Within the hour the wind is 20-30 sustained out of the wrong direction and you are now battling to catch fish for two days.  In this episode we talk tough conditions and how to fish those tough times when you have too.  When coming off the water isn't an option.   

Plan C

What ever doesn't kill you...makes you stronger.  In fishing the painful is often times the best lesson we can learn.  When Plan A and B fail most have no idea what Plan C is.  If you want to be a consistent fisherman and fish tournaments and produce fish, you need to always be thinking about whats your next move.  You can catch 20, 16 inch fish by casting the same hump every year and you feel like a rock star.  Your neighbor who fishes all over the lake every year is a Plan C kinda guy and instead of 20 fish he catches 50 and he does it rain or shine.  Force yourself out of your comfort zone and fish different ways on different parts of the lake and start to teach yourself Plan C.

The Next Level...Spinners

Late spring and early summer start the time of year when spinner fishing becomes a must know technique for Walleye fishing.  Spinners can be used in open water behind boards, along structure behind bottom bouncers and through the tops of trees.  Spinners can often times produce fish when other presentations fall short.  In this episode we go into the W's of spinner fishing.  

Early Summer Slip Bobbers

Late spring and early summer is a perfect time to get out the slip bobbers.  One of the most effective ways to work tight areas of structure for big big fish.  This technique is often overlooked by tournament anglers due to it's slow pace, but this versatile way of fishing can be ultra productive.  A perfect way to keep your kids interested in fishing and one of the best dead stick presentations on the planet.  Everything slip bobbers.
